Semi hits overpass; diverts traffic

It was quite a sight.

The Riverside Dr. Overpass on the edge of Prince Albert was closed to over-weight truck loads on southbound lanes after it was hit by a semi truck.

Heavy tow truck crews tried to dislodge the container that appeared wedged between the road surface and the structure. The load left the flatbed semi after it struck the under part of the Highway 2 overpass.

Detours were put in place.

“The semi went under the overpass,” Wes Hicks, the city’s capital projects manager said. He added a part of Highway 55 has clear signs showing the clearance for the overpass. “There are many warning signs indicating the height restriction.”

Hicks said while it appeared the damage wasn’t ‘extremely bad’ they would await the findings of a structural engineer who’ll inspect the overpass Thursday. Only after that would the overpass be cleared for all heavy loads.

The semi was carrying a container of industrial equipment and Hicks said his understanding was there were no injuries.

Hicks said it appears the driver ignored the many warnings on that stretch of the road.

“There are several signs indicating that semi trucks are not allowed. There’s flashing lights and more than one indicator of the height restriction. We’ll leave it to the police to decide what charges will be laid.”
