Phillips laid to rest in Melfort
Fittingly at the Kerry Vickar Centre, a marquee venue Kevin Phillips spearheaded in Melfort, locals and colleagues gathered for his funeral on Monday.
The 63-year-old MLA for the Melfort constituency died suddenly on Nov. 13. Premier Brad Wall was among the many members of the legislature that attended the funeral. Wall praised his colleague when speaking.
“His example of one of humility and humour, he had a great sense of humour. His example is a positive effect. He effected change in this part of the world, this part of our province through his business efforts, through his advocations and his service work and volunteerism,” Wall told the crowd.
Phillips was part of the legislature since being elected in 2011, prior to that position he served as the city’s mayor for five years. Wall pointed to another facility in the city that Phillips was a key driver behind, the North East Outreach Support Services shelter, the first of its kind constructed in the province since 1989.
