Zuck wins Dmyterko scholarship; tournament results

It’s been almost 30 years since Kelly Dmyterko tragically lost his life in a snowmobile accident. He was visiting home for a weekend while playing for the Lloydminster Lancers in the SJHL when the accident occurred Dec. 6, 1987.

His memory has lived on ever since through the Kelly Dmyterko Memorial Midget AA Hockey Tournament, the 29^th of which was held in Prince Albert over the weekend.

Kelly’s mother Anne Dymterko participated in the ceremonial puck drop on Saturday as the hosting Prince Albert Dairy Queen Chill took on the Winnipeg Hawks.

She talked about how much Kelly adored the game of hockey and would never be caught late for a game.

“If the game started at 8 o’clock in the morning, he was always here at 6:30,” Anne said. “He loved the game, there was no pushing him.

“It’s just so good to watch all the other hockey players come in, all the other teams come in. There’s 15 teams in this tournament, we just love it.”

Each year, the tournament gives a scholarship to a player both engaged in post-secondary education, as well as showing the same spirit Kelly did while he played. That honour was given to Dillon Zuck this year.

Zuck played on the Midget AA Raiders for three years from 2013-2016. He’s now at the University of Saskatchewan, currently in his second year in the Edwards School of Business.

“It’s just nice to see that my time on the team, the passion and the effort was seen by everyone,” Zuck said. “I see the guys who won it before, I respected those guys too and played alongside them. To be considered on their level is great—really, really great.”

Zuck is still playing hockey of course, suiting up for the Saskatoon Westleys in the Prairie Junior Hockey League for the last two seasons.

2017 Tournament

The hosting Midget AA team, the Prince Albert Dairy Queen Chill, finished 1-1-1 in the round robin and did not advance to the playoffs.

Team Northeast and the Calgary Blazers met in the finals, with the Blazers winning 7-2.

The Notre Dame Argos picked up the B Final over the Beardy’s Blackhawks, with a 4-3 win.
