Gas leak false alarm: A good opportunity for education

Is it a natural gas leak, or is it the smell of skunk? According to Prince Albert’s deputy fire chief; when in doubt, call the department.

A call for a natural gas leak this morning in the West Flat, turned out to be a false alarm. Corey Rodgers said the smell from this morning was just a skunk.

“To the average citizen you may not be able to distinguish between the skunk smell and the mercaptan that is an additive in natural gas,” he said.

Rodgers said natural gas mostly smells like rotten eggs.

Incidents like these are a good reminder to keep any and all alarms in check. The deputy chief recommended smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, adding the fire department wasn’t as worried about alarms that detect natural gas.

Regardless, both SaskEnergy and P.A. Fire encouraged anyone to call 911 if they do suspect a gas leak.

“Anytime people are unsure, it’s important to make that phone call. Especially when we’re dealing with gas.”
