Silvernagle rink showing improvements with every event

If you had of told any member of Robyn Silvernagle’s rink they would have made it to two consecutive quarter-finals in the only two events they entered this season, they would have gladly taken it.

The team which represents the Twin Rivers curling club in North Battleford made it to the round of eight at the Colonial Squares Classic played at the Nutana curling club in Saskatoon on Sunday before losing on Sunday afternoon 7-5 to Allison Flaxey of Winnipeg. Two weeks ago at the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling Tour Challenge event in Regina, her rink made it to quarter-finals before losing to another Winnipeg rink in Kerri Eianarson.

“We played well here in Saskatoon this weekend,” Silvernagle said. ”We had a chance to win the match against Allison [Flaxey] and just missed by a hair.”

Silvernagle liked her team’s game right now and believed once they get to regular practices, they will see better results.

“We are not using lack of ice time as an excuse,” she added. “However, a few practices under our belt and I’m sure we will see better results.”

Silvernagle along with third Jolene Campbell (Regina), second stone Dayna Demers (Meadow Lake) and lead Kara Thevenot (Prince Albert) opened the Colonial with a 5-4 win over veteran Nancy Martin of Saskatoon on Friday afternoon, then lost 7-2 to Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg who has won the Colonial Squares Classic on two occasions (2006, 2013).

Not dismayed by the lopsided loss to Jones, the local foursome beat Ashley Howard of Regina 6-5 to finish day one of competition with a 2-1 record and headed into the qualifying round on Saturday where she faced Korea’s Un-Chi Gim.

“The qualifier against Gim was an exciting game,” Silvernagle added after her team ousted her Korean opponent 5-4 to set up the Sunday quarter-final showdown with Flaxey.

The Colonial Squares Classic is just one of the many stops on the World Curling Tour (WTC) the Silvernagle rink will compete in this season. Each event earns points towards your overall rankings on the WTC tour. Before the tournament began Silvernagle’s squad was 28th in the world out of over 170 teams.

Silvernagle, Campbell, Demers and Thevenot see action again this weekend travelling to Vernon B.C. to compete in the Prestige Hotels and Resorts Curling Classic Sept. 28 to Oct. 1.
