Community comes together to remember local

Sep 24, 2017 | 11:53 AM

Almost 1,000 people descended on the Art Hauser Centre Saturday afternoon to celebrate the life of a well-known Prince Albert man.

Jordan Darchuk was killed in a hunting incident earlier this month and the community came together over the weekend to mourn and remember the 23-year-old.

Friends and family told stories of the life-long local who attended John Diefenbaker School and graduated from Carlton Comprehensive High School in 2012. He worked as an Occupational Health and Safety Officer with the Broda Group.

His two sisters, Whitney and Julie, and two close friends recalled many fond memories of Darchuk. He was described as a man who “found happiness in the fields and forests” around Prince Albert and in his basement and fathers workshop.

Both sisters said their younger brother eagerly took on the role of the man of the house after the passing of their father, Ben.

Darchuk was described as “excited about the future and ready to live it.” A story was told about him eager to buy a dog, name it Garth and train it as a hunting dog. He enjoyed any and all outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and spending time his families cabin. His friends said Darchuk was always making sure those around him were happy, safe, and having fun.

As Darchuk was a lover of the drink Tang, the fruit-flavoured drink was served at the event.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked donations be made to SaskTip; a nonprofit organization that pays rewards to those who help turn in poachers.

On Sept 16, Nipawin RCMP was called to a complaint of an injured man in a rural field near Weirdale. An investigation revealed Darchuk and another 22-year-old man from Prince Albert, were hunting in the same area at the same time but did not know each other. Darchuk was found deceased on the scene with an apparent gunshot wound. The incident was reported to police by the other hunter who remained at the scene. The incident is not considered suspicious.
