Recently, paramedics responded to a possible cardiac arrest at a local seniors care home.

Upon arrival at the scene paramedics found the staff performing chest compressions on a unconscious resident. Paramedics continued these lifesaving steps and from the history determined the person was eating at the time of their collapse. Shortly after the paramedics arrival, paramedics were able to clear the person’s airway and the resident began to breath on their own. Paramedics continued care to the hospital where the resident was seen by a doctor. It is reported that the resident will make a full and complete recovery.

Knowing what to do for someone who is chocking is a simple but life saving skill.

This incident proves that if back blows and chest thrusts are not effective for a conscious person and the person goes unconscious, then chest thrusts are the next life saving steps. Staff at the care home reacted quickly and correctly followed up by a rapid paramedic response. Knowing what to do in an emergency can save someone’s life.
