Venice House on Central Stands the Test of Time

Jun 26, 2017 | 12:00 AM

It is a local eatery that has stood the test of time. The Venice House on Central Avenue in downtown Prince Albert is celebrating 40 years of great food and service.

“It feels good to be in business for forty years because it means we are doing something good and the community supports us,” owner Antony Yannacoulias said.

Antony took over the restaurant from his parents who purchased it in 1976. His mother, Maria Yannacoulias, said there were very few options to eat out in the city then and customers were intrigued by a new flavour.

Antony explained, “ Several Greek immigrants were making their way to Canada at the time and opening restaurants.  My Dad and Uncle met with other immigrants in Regina to share recipes and that’s how this got started.”

Now, the restaurant provides food with Greek and Italian flare but also offers traditional options like hamburgers and fish and chips.

“We are best known for our Greek ribs and riblets,” Antony said. “Our seasoning salt is made in-house.  Pizza and dry ribs go over really well too.  Our sauces are made from scratch.”

Antony noted all the food is made fresh at Venice House but it is not just the food that has kept people coming back; it is the service too.  Some of the employees have worked at the Venice House on Central for 36 years.  Antony said they do their best to create a good working environment for staff which, in turn, improves the customer experience.

“We have so many repeat customers,” he said. “We have people who came here as kids who are now bringing their own kids.  We have couples who dated in high school come back to celebrate anniversaries as married couples…and they sit in the same booth as they did when they were dating!”

Perhaps one of the most notable guests was former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, who Maria recalls ‘sat at table 2’ one day in the late 1970’s.

“One of our cooks in the back was so excited that Diefenbaker was here…. he ran home and got changed into his suit,” Maria remembered fondly.

She doesn’t recall what Diefenbaker ordered for his meal that day, but she guarantees the food is just as good now as it was then.  The Venice House prides itself on offering tasty food and filling portions in a unique environment unlike any other restaurant in the city.  Instead of an ‘open box’ feel, diners can enjoy their own private booths separated by partitions or sit as a large group in their own section. The Venice House also makes eating on the go a gourmet experience.

“We offer quick and easy lunches to get you in and out of the restaurant as quickly as possible on your lunch break, “ Antony said.  “We always have lunch specials and fresh soups daily.”

And there are several combo deals to choose from including ‘Greek Feast’ and ‘Family Lasagna’ options.  Venice House on Central will be offering several deals throughout the remainder of the year to mark its 40th anniversary.
