Buy-Low Foods coming to Saskatchewan

A grocery chain with stores in British Columbia and Alberta is coming to Saskatchewan.

The Jim Pattison Group is building a Buy-Low grocery store in Tisdale, located 140 km southeast of Prince Albert.

According to a press release posted on the town of Tisdale’s website, the new Buy-Low Foods will be the first of its kind in the province.

“We can’t wait to showcase all the best we have to offer to the community when the store opens at the end of this year,” Dan Bregg, the president of Buy-Low Foods said in the statement.

Tisdale’s Economic Development Officer Sean Wallace has been working to bring the store into town for roughly two years.

He said the project will bring between 50 to 70 full and part time job opportunities to the town as well as the labour required to construct the 25,000 square foot building.

Wallace said he was impressed by the initiative of the Jim Pattison Group and Ledcor to hire local businesses to aide in the completion of the project. There are some projects during construction which will require outside help, but for the most part the work will come from locals.

“They’re absolutely fantastic about local content,” Wallace said. “One of the first things Ledcor did when they got to town was go around and talk to local businesses… They’ll retain those services or purchase those products as much as they can locally.”

Wallace said construction is already underway on the new building.

Tisdale’s Mayor Al Jellicoe, said he looks forward to welcoming Buy-Low Foods into the community.

“This is a great day for Tisdale, and a great day for northeast Saskatchewan,” Jellicoe said in the press release. “We are extremely pleased that Buy-Low Foods has chosen Tisdale for their first grocery store in the province.”

The new Buy-Low Foods will feature grocery, frozen, dairy, meats cut in store, produce, deli and a selection of hot items customers can grab and go. Buy-Low is a western Canadian brand, which started with a single store in 1966, and has since expanded to 34 more locations.
