Spiritual Care
The Spiritual Care Department is committed to providing integrated and holistic health care to patients and their families. Spiritual care strives to pay equal attention to all aspects of a patient’s life including their physical, spiritual, social and cultural well-being. This is a reflection of the World Health Organization’s position that health is more than just the absence of disease and that treating a person’s body is only one part of complete healthcare. Spiritual Care is part of the continuum of care that is provided in health organizations. The goal is that such care has a visible and integral place in the accreditation process of Accreditation Canada. Spiritual care operates within a multi-cultural and multi-faith framework and is respectful of individual differences of faith and denominations. Our Spiritual Care staff provide a connection for patients to their faith in a way that is meaningful to them and helps them to better understand and cope with their illness.
The Spiritual Care Department is staffed with a full-time director and volunteers. The Spiritual Care Department Office, located in the Herb Bassett Home, can be reached by calling 306-765-6005.
The department is also able to provide 24-hour, on-call service through the committed efforts of local Clergy within the community. On-call Chaplains can be reached after hours and weekends by calling 960-4638.
You will see Spiritual Care working within Prince Albert Parkland Health Region by:
- Providing care, support and counseling services to patients and their families.
- Organizing and conducting worship events.
- Working as a liaison between patients and their faith communities by coordinating referrals and creating awareness of additional services.
- Facilitating educational opportunities and in-services in various facilities within the region.
- Facilitating grief support groups and bereavement services for families and staff and a bereavement camp for children who have been touched by loss.
- Supporting a multi-disciplinary approach to care by networking with various departments through weekly rounds and representing Spiritual Care on the Ethics Committee.
- Working closely to support families in who have suffered the sudden loss of a loved one or the tragic news of serious illness.
- Providing dignified end-of-life care and support to Palliative patients and their families.
- Promoting a strong spiritual presence within healthcare by enriching the lives of patients, staff and families through comforting support, worship and faith.
