Remembrance Day celebrations begin in rural Saskatchewan

Nov 2, 2016 | 5:10 PM

It was a somber day at Wild Rose School near Shellbrook. Students gathered for their annual Remembrance Day ceremony in front of some honoured guests.

Members of the Shellbrook Legion joined them, as well as Captain Connor Ryan of the Royal Canadian Air Force. He has a connection to the school, as his mother Aileen Ryan is their custodian. He spoke of his time in the force and what Remembrance Day means to him.

The celebration was organized by math and part-time kindergarten teacher Regan Bompais. This was her fourth time putting on the ceremony at the school.

“I think it just hits home a little harder that we have so many opportunities in Canada,” she said of her students and their respect for what soldiers do.

She said Remembrance Day has been “dear to (her) heart” ever since a high school trip to Ottawa.

“We’d been to the grave sites three times and I think that sparked an interest,” she said.

paNOW will have Cpt. Ryan’s story as part of our Remembrance Day coverage.

He said though combat missions are part of being in the Air Force, his most rewarding experience was providing aid to the Philippines after it was devastated by Hurricane Haiyan in 2013.

Editor’s Note: This story was changed on Nov. 6 at 2:23 p.m. to clarify Cpt. Ryan’s involvement in the Air Force.
