Kuro Tora Dojo brings home several awards after tournament

The Kicktober Fest open martial arts tournament was held this past weekend on Oct. 22 by the Kuro Tora Dojo at the Alfred Jenkins Centre.

The foggy weather ended up causing several out of town competitors to miss the tournament, but organizers said it was still a success.

Martial artists across the country demonstrated in many divisions, including the kata or open hand forms, weapon forms, point sparring, weapon sparring and light kickboxing.

Kicktober Fest is a provincial qualifying tournament — those who placed in the top three spots of their division also gained qualifying points to participate in the provincial championship next spring in Regina.

The Black Belts of Kuro Tora Dojo brought home all three grand championship awards.

Sho Sensei Matthias Manicke earned the title of weapon sparring grand champion, Shihan Shawn Silver is the kata grand champion and Kyoshi Wolfgang Manicke became grand champon.

The next tournament for students in all four of the Kuro Tora Dojo’s will be the Fire and Ice Tournament in February, 2017.
