New community garden takes root in West Hill

The efforts of a number of community organizations are bearing fruit, or in this case, vegetables.

A new community garden at 1650 Sixth Ave. W. will help supply for fresh produce for the food bank.

Wes Clark, Executive Director of the Prince Albert Share-A-Meal food bank, said the idea for the project came about last winter and this location was a good fit.

“We need access to water and [Share-A-Meal] is a really important partner.  This is also locked land so it’s not of a high priority to anybody,” he said

The formation of this garden was through the efforts of multiple groups.

Glenmor Equipment and McKay Contracting helped dig up the land and a group of University of Saskatchewan nursing students pitched in during set up. Rona donated plants and Dmyterko Enterprises donated topsoil for the project.

Volunteers from the food bank will help maintain the garden.

“We’re good for five years and I believe our lease says we can extend it another five,” Clark said.

Josh Morrow is among the garden’s many contributors who made a financial donation as well as contacting a friend at Glenmor Equipment to help turn the soil.

“That’s the beauty of planting a seed, you get to watch it grow, you get to nurture it and there’s a reward at the end of the day and that’s a harvest,” Morrow said.
