Ready, set, action! Sask Polytech hosts first film camp in P.A.

The next Steven Spielberg or James Cameron may very well come from Prince Albert.

Thirteen local high school students have spent this past week making their own films through the first annual Saskatchewan Polytechnic Summer Shorts Film Camp. The students will showcase their work Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the college campus.

Kevin Mahlberg, program head for the Media Arts Production and New Media Communication program at the school, said after seeing what was available around the province, he wanted to create a summer film camp in P.A.

“I had seen (something similar) done at another camp in Moose Jaw and they were doing a gaming camp, and you know just the engagement the students had was amazing,” he said.

The students enrolled in the film camp range in age from 13 to 17. They took a crash course in production, editing and filming.

“Initially I was a little concerned to see what kind of ideas would come around but they’ve been marvelous. The students are here early before we start in the morning, and they’re in the lab or the classroom over lunch as well. You can tell they are really excited and really engaged in what they are doing,” Mahlberg said.

He said he will definitely offer the program again next year.

The goal of the program is to inspire a student to choose a career in communications and enroll in the Media Arts Production program at Saskatchewan Polytech.
