Roughly 7,500 chickens lost in farm fire

Aug 10, 2016 | 3:50 PM

A local poultry farm was handed a devastating blow after one of their buildings was engulfed in a blaze.

Shawn Harman, co-owner of Harman Poultry Farm north of Prince Albert, said roughly 7,500 chickens were lost in the fire on Monday, Aug 8.

“It’s a real disappointing thing for us to see this happen,” he said. “We’re really devastated by the whole thing.”

Eggs from the farm are sold primarily in Saskatchewan.

“There’s definitely going to be an economic impact but that’s what insurance is for. Our bigger concern is the welfare of the animals on the farm,” Harman said.

Though disappointed with the loss of chickens, he said it was fortunate a larger facility on the property did not go up in flames and no human lives were lost.

An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the fire.

Harman said though the site has dealt with previous fires, this was the first time property with animals inside has been lost.
