Gardening the Wright way

Jul 8, 2016 | 12:00 AM

There is a deep connection to community when a business such as Wright’s Greenhouse serves the area for more than 38 years.

With three generations of knowledge, through changes in the industry, during the good times and the bad in the farming area they call home, Wright’s Greenhouse has always been there to not only provide the highest quality bedding plants, but also provide advice and a strong involvement in the communities they serve.

“When we began this business, Angie was just a baby and she was here with us while we worked,” recalls Wendy Wright who commented that Wright’s Greenhouse was started when she and her husband, Tom, moved back home to Beatty after a downturn in the Alberta economy in the 1970s.

Since then, the family slowly grew the business, with help from Tom’s parents. The baby rocking in a bassinet in the greenhouse became a toddler and then a young woman passionate about the business.

At the same time, trips to Wright’s Greenhouse became a tradition with most families in the area and the bright red delivery truck with the Wright’s Greenhouse sign on the side was driven by Grandfather, Cam Wright, happily making deliveries well into his very senior years.

Because Angie (Wright) Bragg, who now manages three locations: St. Brieux, Beatty and Melfort literally grew up in the greenhouses, she was the natural one to take the next step and go on to take her Horticultural degree through Olds College.

With her lifetime of greenhouse experience, her training and continual updates in gardening trends, Bragg and her family provide multiple greenhouses filled with every plant imaginable for gardeners of all preferences.

Walking through the three locations, one can find every plant imaginable from beautifully blooming Begonias to grasses, from watermelons to celery. The greenhouses are truly a feast for the eyes and able to provide a palette of beauty and function to any yard and garden.

With the trend towards lush yards full of plants, Angie, her parents and the staff are all well able to make any Saskatchewan gardening dream become a reality by providing not only the exquisite selection of plants, but advise on what grows well, soil types, what plants do best in certain conditions and locations and so on.

Kinistino Communities in Bloom program is a great example of bringing great plants and expert advise together. Kinistino has received incredible recognition through the program and a large part of that is the floral design. Kinistino has won both provincial and national accolades in the past few years. The City of Melfort has also benefitted from the Wright’s Greenhouse expertise using the Wright plants.

Gardening accessories and merchandise are also an important trend and Wright’s has accommodated this with a large selection of gift ware, garden accessories and fashion in the Melfort location with a new shipment in just in time for the season opening.

All three locations open May 2nd and will be open 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Beatty and St. Brieux locations are finished at the end of June while the Melfort location is open until the end of August.
