Saskatoon young gun makes Lobstick history

Jun 18, 2016 | 5:06 PM

“It feels unreal.”

It usually does when one creates history.

On Saturday at the Waskesiu Golf Course, 19-year-old Ty Campbell did something nobody had ever done before in over 80 years of Lobstick tournament history. Campbell won the 2016 Conexus Men’s Lobstick, a year after winning the Junior Lobstick. The Waskesiu golf staff confirmed the record, after much digging into their archives.

Saskatoon’s Campbell beat Medicine Hat’s Warren Gnam on the full 18 holes to be crowned the champion.

But despite his historic performance, if you asked Campbell what his chances were heading into the tournament, he probably wouldn’t have given you a confident answer after a less than ideal practice round.

“I wasn’t too sure. My game wasn’t in the best spot coming into the week—my practice round was rough,” Campbell said. “In the qualifier, I started to figure it out and the second day, I really figured it out. Throughout the week, it got better from there.”

Campbell was firing on all cylinders early, as he was four up after 13 holes, but Gnam didn’t go away before putting up a heck of a fight.

Gnam birded 14 to make it a three-hole game. Campbell then lost 15 after what he calls a “tough up-and-down.” After a carry over on 16, Gnam made a putt up the hill on 17 about the entire length of the green to win the hole, stay alive in the match and force an 18th hole with Campbell just one stroke ahead.

“I was getting a little nervous on the tee there,” Campbell said. “But I was able to hit a good tee shot and hit a really good second shot to seal the deal.

“I just took a few deep breaths and tried not to think about it, just swing the way I was able to all week.”

Campbell’s second shot stuck a few mere feet away from the pin, giving him the victory on 18 and the historic championship.
