Coben outlasts 3-hole playoff to win 6th straight Senior Lobstick

When Colin Coben was presented with his sixth consecutive Conexus Senior Men’s Lobstick title on Thursday at the Waskesiu Golf Course, he took a moment to soak it all in.

After winning the tournament in a three-hole playoff for the second straight year, the 61-year-old deadeye from Delisle lifted it up and turned it on its side to see all the “Colin Coben” entries on it.

“It’s very special, it’s getting tougher every year,” Coben said. “You want to win and you think ‘this might be the end of it,’ but you manage to find a way to win.”

Coben’s championship dynasty was very much in jeopardy this year. He found himself in a three-way tie with Regina’s Doug Kozak and Paul Grimes from Arcola, all of whom had a score of 217 after three rounds.

Grimes was eliminated on the first playoff hole after bogeying Hole 1, but received congratulatory hugs from both of his competitors for his efforts.

Coben had a seven-foot putt on Hole 2 for the win, but his miss meant both players kept marching on.

At that point, there was a sense of déjà vu as Coben took to the Hole 3 tee box.

He birdied the hole to win in three playoff holes, after accomplishing the exact feat last year to defeat Saskatoon’s Murray Osborn.

“I like the hole,” Coben said. “The key is to stay below the hole. I was below the hole and I was able to bang it up the hill and knock it on.

“Doug was a little behind the hole, that’s a tough putt. Anyway, I made the putt.”

Coben admitted he wasn’t sure he’d even be able to force a playoff with the way his opponents were playing.

“Those guys played so good today, Paul Grimes and Doug Kozak,” Coben said. “I was playing with them (in the same group) but I didn’t have a good start. I knew where everybody was and I finally made a putt on 17 to tie up with them. Then I thought ‘I’m still in this’ but before that, it was so tough because they were playing so good. Paul was two-under after 10 and Doug was making all pars.”

Saskatoon’s Bill Lewis won the Super Senior division by seven strokes. He ended up with a score of 214 after three consistent rounds, 70 on the opening day and a pair of 72’s to close it out. Saskatoon’s Doug Piper was the runner up with a score of 221.
