Shellbrook high schooler gets boost for veterinarian dreams

Jun 7, 2016 | 12:00 PM

Like many children, the dream growing up for a Shellbrook high school student was to work with animals.

Hailey Harms is now one step closer to fulfilling her dream of becoming a veterinarian after receiving a $2,000 scholarship from the Ministry of Agriculture.

“I’ve always wanted to work with cows and cattle and poultry and I thought being a veterinarian would help ensure their health,” Harms said.

She’ll graduate this June from W.P. Sandin High School and plans to enroll at the University of Saskatchewan in the fall. After completing her animal sciences degree, she aims to apply to veterinary college.

Harms was only one of four students in the province to receive money.

Her submission was a three minute video presentation about the future of the agriculture industry being dependent on the next generation.

She said more work needs to be done to attract young people to agriculture.

“People just aren’t seeing it as a viable career source right now. They’re always looking into these new up and coming industries like solar power,” she said.

In total, $10,000 in scholarship money was awarded.

Grand prize winner Sheldon Daniel from Avonlea received $4,000.

Kaitlyn Kitzan from Theodore and Autumn Lawson from Rose Valley received the runner-up scholarships.
