Carlton Composite High School participated in some traditional First Nation ceremonies March 18.

The 3rd annual Carlton Round Dance brought in a mixture of cultures to the high school, teaching many students about First Nation traditions.

“It’s something that started here in the school a number of years ago due to the fact that we have a lot of our First Nation’s people coming out and educating ourselves here in the school,” Sanford Strongarm said, the Master of Ceremonies at the round dance. “And I think for many many years, as far as I can remember, there was a lot of people that have gone through the school, here and one of the things that our Elders have spoken about many many times about is that cultural sharing is very important.”

Strongarm, from Kawacatoose First Nation, explained the significance of pipe smoking and the round dance to the students.
