Melfort animal shelter could break ground by spring

Feb 27, 2016 | 12:19 PM

A shelter in Melfort to house stray animals is one step closer to becoming a reality.

Bill Wood, media spokesperson for the North East SPCA, said the organization could be a few months away from ground breaking for a new facility.

“We’re working on a number of things. The floor plans (for the shelter) have been finalized…it’s going to be on Hamilton Ave. W. in the city of Melfort,” Woods said.

Wood said they’ve raised $260,000 and hope to break ground this spring but they’d like to raise another $100,000 before then.

“Our Helping Paws campaign has been going on for about a year and a half now. The sponsorship drives continue, we have a lot of smaller fundraisers but we do have larger ones too,” Wood said.

The North East SPCA will be at the Nipawin Lion’s Trade Show from April 15 to 17 and Wood said on May 5, Doc Walker will be performing also in Nipawin.

Wood said the new building is very necessary to house all the organization’s animals.

“…We have an over-population of cats right now…and we, like anyone else, we have a lot of strays,” he said.
