Security situation closes Nipawin Hospital

Feb 26, 2016 | 9:30 AM

Nipawin RCMP may know who’s responsible for a series of prank calls resulting in the temporary closure of two healthcare facilities in the town.

“At this point, we have persons of interest. We also…know the number the calls came from and at this time we’re not going to release any information of who may have owned that cell phone,” Darren Wouters detachment commander with Nipawin RCMP said.

Police said a 911 call came in at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Thursday Feb. 25, of a bomb threat. They received another call from a person who said they’d harm themselves. A third “threatening” call came in at 6 a.m.

“I think…on the third call that came in early this morning it was a woman again whispering in a low voice about a bomb in the hospital,” Wouters said.

The situation also caused a temporary bypass of the Nipawin Hospital Emergency Room.

RCMP investigated and determined there were no suspicious explosive materials at the hospital.

“We just felt that given the nature of the situation, and working collaboratively with the RCMP, that in the interest of safety it was best to close the hospital at this time,” Kelsey Trail Health Region CEO Shane Merriman said.

“A great credit goes out to our staff. They’ve been handling the situation very well. Things are calm and it’s been handled in a very professional manner,” Merriman said.

The public is being asked to stay away from the hospital and emergency room. People needing emergency medical care should call 911 or visit hospitals in Melfort or Tisdale.

The health region is asking family members to direct inquiries about Pineview Lodge residents to 306-862-6179 and inquiries about Nipawin Hospital patients to 306-862-6178.
