Young boxer dreams of a Las Vegas title fight

Feb 20, 2016 | 9:08 AM

Ian Abbott from Sandy Lake reserve will have his first professional boxing fight on Feb. 27 after training for nearly five years.

The 22-year-old is on the card at the Boxing At Last event in Saskatoon at Prairieland Park.

Growing up with five older brothers, Abbott said boxing came naturally to him.

“My brothers all got into hockey then it was just natural for me to go into another rough sport.”

Abbott makes the hour drive into Prince Albert three times a week to train at the Thomas Settee Boxing Club.

“I don’t do anything else, I just literally train for this fight…I don’t have a job or anything,” he said.

Looking ahead to his fight in Saskatoon, Abbott said he didn’t know much about his opponent, not even his name, but that he wasn’t feeling nervous.

“I feel really good, this is actually the best I’ve ever felt for a fight,” he said.

Abbott’s amateur boxing record is 1-3.

Tickets are still available for the event in Saskatoon. They are $25 at the door.

The show starts at 7 p.m.
