PBCN defends Urban Councillor

Dec 9, 2015 | 5:22 AM

Ben Merasty the executive director for Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation insists urban councillor Warren McCallum did nothing wrong.

A group of urban band members are calling for McCallum’s immediate removal amid allegations of vote buying, financial mismanagement, and breaching the election code.

The band members allege McCallum appointed family members to the elders’ council.  This would contradict with Sect. 16 of the band’s custom elections act which addresses conflict of interest.

Merasty would not comment directly on the allegations.

A closed door meeting was held last week at Parkland Community Hall in Prince Albert.  Security was hired to ensure the media was kept out.

Neither Chief Peter Beatty nor Warren McCallum were there to discuss the issue with the concerned band members.

Rather band members were simply informed that the executive could not get involved in polical matters.

paNOW has made repeated attempts to contact McCallum and PBCN Chief Peter Beatty for comment.

Those calls have not been returned.
