Warriors make a Point against the Raiders

Nov 8, 2015 | 7:08 AM

Moose Jaw Warrior captain Brayden Point was a one man wrecking crew scoring four times and assisting on the opening goal of the game to pace the Warriors to a 6-4 win over the Prince Albert Raiders in Moose Jaw.

The small shifty centreman destined for a spot on Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships got the 3,297 Mosaic Place fans off their feet, setting up Dryden Hunt for a snap shot into a wide open net with a perfect feed on a 2-on-1 break just 2:01 into the first period.

Point also popped in a Nikita Popugaeuv rebound eight minutes into the second period to make it 3-1 Moose Jaw, three minute after a sizzling Luke Coleman slapshot from the right wing circle would get the Raiders on the board in the second period.

Point then tapped a backhand saucer pass from Hunt out of the air and over the outstretched glove of Raider goalie Rylan Patenteau.

Point was the momentun killer again late in the period snapping in a power play goal one minute after Tim Vanstone had pulled the P.A. pack to within two with his second goal of the season.

The Raiders wouldn’t quit. They dominated the third period with quick back to back goals to make it a one goal game.

Jordan Tkatch sprung Sean Montgomery with a breakway pass which the 17 year old took behind his back, spun, outraced Point to the net and sniped a top shelf shorthanded snapper at 5:55.

Brendan Guhle, who assisted on the Coleman goal, rifled a blast from the left wing half wall past a suprised Zach Sawchenko just over a minute later and all of a sudden it’s a 5-4 game.

Moments later, Coleman just missed jamming home a rebound while a Tkatch blast was stopped by Sawchenko on the next shift after a huge hit by Dalton Yorke on Brett Howden caused the turnover.

The Raiders continued to press, outshooting the home side 16-2 in the final frame, but Point put the game away with an empty net goal.

He slapped the puck while winning the face-off outside the Warrior blue line and the disc fluttered down the ice and into the vacant Raider net with 1:09 remaining.

Assistant coach Kelly Guard told the 900 CKBI post game show audience they were plagued by a slow start and loose defensive play as Point found a way to free wheel throughout the evening.

He also said working on the power play will be a priority after an 0/4 night which leaves them 0-for-their-last-19 with the man advantage.

The Raiders outshot the Warriors 34-31 with Moose Jaw going 1/3 on the power play to pick up their 10th win of the season.

Despite dropping four of their last five games, the Raiders remain tied with Red Deer atop the Eastern Conference and two points ahead of Brandon in the Eastern Division as Saskatoon beat the Rebels 4-2 and Swift Current whipped the Wheat Kings 4-1.

The Raiders have the week off before hosting Saskatoon Friday night.  Reid Gardiner and Brendan Guhle meanwhile will play for Team WHL Monday and Tuesday against the touring Russians.
