Hudson Bay opens new Pre-K to grade 12 community school

Years of waiting have paid off for the small northern Saskatchewan community of Hudson Bay.

On Friday, Oct. 6, they officially opened their new Pre-K-12 school.

Principal Lisa Gell was joined by her students, teachers, community members, representatives from the North East School Division and education minister Don Morgan to open the doors.

Hudson Bay had been in dire need of a new school.

“The school had so many repairs that it wasn’t feasible (to fix)” Gell said. “Our auditorium was basically sinking into the marsh…the roofs weren’t good anymore.”

Gell said the new school has features she could have never dreamed of.

The auditorium features a rollout seating system, good news for any students or staff who still cringe at their memories of putting out and then putting away more than 400 chairs for assemblies.

The woodshop has been expanded to give students room to build larger products.

As well, the gym now has walls that split it into two full-sized courts.

More than $600 000 had been raised by the community for the school, as well as assistance from the Government of Saskatchewan.

The community had been adamant that the school be named the Hudson Bay Community School, according to Gell.

Beside regular classes, the school will also be used for extra curriculur studies, everything from quad courses, fire arm safety, and piano. “They wanted it to be the focal point of the community,” Gell said.
