Sask. introducing ‘Support our Troops’ license plates

Nov 5, 2015 | 4:28 PM

Just in time for Remembrance Day, drivers in Saskatchewan will now be able to buy another special license plate that honours and recognizes the men and women in uniform.

The “Support Our Troops” plates are available to purchase for $55.

The plates feature a white background with green lettering. The top left corner has a graphic of a Canadian flag with a black silhouette of military members underneath. The “Support Our Troops” phrase is written in white lettering and a yellow ribbon completes the design.

Stacey Cherry helped spearhead the idea. Her son Brandon is in the military, based out of CFB Edmonton.

“What he’s done I’m so proud, and not just as a mom,” she said. “They need to know that everyone in Canada’s behind them, whether they’re gone or whether they’re here. Just because they’re not in the war doesn’t mean they’re not fighting their own battle at home.”

A total of $30 from the sale of the plates will go towards Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services, which support members and their families.

Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield also announced a national “Support Our Troops” Gala will be held on Nov. 4, 2016 to honour military service personnel and their families. Canadian Governor General David Johnston will serve as Honorary Patron.

Money raised from that event will go to the Military Families Fund and the Soldier On Program.
