Holy smokes! Candle Lake mayor wins Smoke Signals Jackpot

Oct 30, 2015 | 4:35 PM

“Holy smokes. I’m a millionaire,” John Quinn said to the media shortly after receiving his big cheque.

Quinn, mayor of Candle Lake and former Prince Albert Police Chief, is the province’s latest millionaire, wining $1.5 million in SIGA’s Smoke Signals Jackpot.

Quinn and wife Sharon were playing the Northern Lights Casino early Tuesday morning when lady luck paid them a visit.

“This is crazy,” Quinn expelled. “Never in your wildest imagination do you think that’s going to happen to you.

“We were just kind of dumbfounded for a while and the whole week has been like that. We still can’t believe that it actually happened.”

Often gravitated to the same machine, Sharon says it was another act of luck that lead to their big win.

“We were actually going to go home,” she recalled. “There was someone on it. The guy got up and left and I said, ‘Grab my machine!’”

They were presented with their earnings on Friday afternoon. In attendance were several friends and family members.

“We have four children, 10 grandchildren, so we want to look after them,” Quinn said.

He also added they will use the winnings to pay off some bills, invest and do some travelling.

Quinn’s grandson, Trey Lyles, was drafted with the 12th overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft by the Utah Jazz. Quinn says he’ll be able to see his grandson play more often now.

“I don’t know how to describe it. All of a sudden you’ve gone from playing a few dollars to suddenly realizing, “Holy smokes. I’m a millionaire,” he said. “It’s kind of a funny feeling. What do we do now?”

Even with his earnings, Quinn says it won’t stop him from visiting the Northern Lights Casino.

“It’s entertainment and I think that’s what you have to look at it as, rather than trying to figure you walk into the door and you’re going to walk out with a pocketful of money.”

The Smoke Signals Jackpot links 52 slot machines over six SIGA casinos.

As of October 26, the jackpot has paid out over $23.7 million with the Northern Lights Casino contributing to just under $12 million of the total number.

Northern Lights Casino has had 18 Smoke Signals Jackpot winners – the most of any of the SIGA casinos.
