Mistawasis School collects costumes as Halloween creeps up

Putting a costume together for Halloween can be both costly and time consuming, but one school is working to ensure each student can take part in the fun.

Yvonne Daniels, community school coordinator for Chief Mistawasis School—located just outside of Leask, has been gathering Halloween costumes for students who may have had to go without.

“It’s something that is needed because we have a lot of parents who are on the reserve that don’t have transportation to the city to pick up stuff and any stores that are close by, the stuff is quite expensive,” said Daniels. “We try to help them out on our end by giving them stuff that we can access free with in-kind donations.”

The school is still accepting costumes, face paint and wigs.

“Anything that the kids can use to get them all dressed up for Halloween,” said Daniels, although she said masks must be left out so germs aren’t spread.

According to Daniels, school staff want each student to be decked out for the holiday, as they’re hosting a Halloween dance and costume contest on Friday.

“We want to make sure that the kids all have equal opportunity to try and win the prizes,” she said.

On Saturday, there will be a costume parade.

Daniels said she wanted to help out, knowing the difficulties many parents face.

“I’m a mother and a grandmother. My daughter has six kids so I know how much she struggles,” said Daniels. “When I see the kids out here wanting to do this, and wanting to do that, but they’re unable to because of money situations or ride situations—it just tugs at my heartstrings and I just want to help them with whatever I can give.”

Now that temperatures are starting to cool down, Daniels said she’ll also be scoping out which students need winter clothes and will be accepting donations of boots, mitts, toques and jackets. Daniels said she’s also collecting sweaters of all types for a mitt-making workshop she’s planning for the community.
