Warkentine happy to be home, but misses out on facing brother

Throughout this season, Drew Warkentine was ready to do something he’s never done before, play against his older brother Miles in a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League game Friday, with Miles’ Melfort Mustangs hosting Drew’s Humboldt Broncos.

The Warkentine-on-Warkentine matchup was scrapped after the Prince Albert Raiders announced on Wednesday they acquired Drew from the Kootenay Ice in exchange for Dylan Stewart and a conditional fifth round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.

“I was looking forward to playing him,” smiled Drew. “When I got the call, I texted him saying ‘Well, it looks like I’m not playing you.’ He was like ‘Why?’ and I said, ‘I got traded to the Raiders.’

“I’m going to miss out on that, but it’s worth it.”

“It’s worth it,” because Drew gets a chance to play for his hometown Raiders, a team he grew up watching. He couldn’t put a number on how many Raider games he watched as a fan, but estimated it’s somewhere in the “hundreds.”

“It’ll be pretty amazing. Growing up watching the team and everything and now to be out there wearing the jersey, it will be pretty cool,” said Drew.

The trade gives Drew a promotion from Junior A with the Broncos, where he scored a goal in five games played, to the Western Hockey League with the Raiders.

Drew resurfaced in Humboldt after deciding to leave the Kootenay Ice, who drafted him in the fifth round of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.

“I just felt that it would be better for me to come back to Saskatchewan. Understandably, [the Ice] weren’t too happy,” said Drew. “I didn’t expect to get traded, I didn’t ask for it or anything but it happened. I’m happy to be in P.A.”

Before his stint with the Broncos, Drew played two seasons with the Tisdale Trojans. Last year as a 16-year-old, Drew scored 36 goals and 66 points in 44 games. In the last game he played in the Art Hauser Centre, Drew scored four goals in a 5-2 Trojans win over the Prince Albert Mintos.

Drew has just arrived to the Raiders and it’s unclear if he’ll play Friday’s game against the Moose Jaw Warriors after just one full practice heading into game day.

“We’ll see how it goes. He’s been playing in Humboldt but we just want to get a read on him,” said Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid. “We want to put him in a place where he can have success.”

Warkentine is currently the only player on the Raiders who considers Prince Albert their hometown. Last year’s captain Sawyer Lange was the last P.A. product to play for the Raiders.

The Raiders will be busy, playing five games in an eight-game span, starting on Friday with the Pink in the Rink game against the Warriors.

The Raiders are then in Regina Sunday to play the Pats, before hosting the Edmonton Oil Kings on Wednesday, the Victoria Royals on Friday and the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday.
