UPDATE: Annual Jail-N-Bail raises 17K for cancer research

Oct 22, 2015 | 11:22 AM

Prince Albert’s annual Jail–N-Bail, a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, raised a total of $17,529.30 at the Gateway Mall on Thursday.

The event is a fun way to raise funds for cancer awareness, and programs, and it is an opportunity for Prince Albert residents to arrange to have someone they know ‘arrested’ for a good cause.

Various jail birds were brought in throughout the day and a celebrity judge determined their bail, giving them the opportunity to raise pledges or bail from their co-workers, friends and family.

Charlene Bernard, manager of the Prince Albert Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, said they have had a number of jail birds brought in so far. She said the warrants for arrest are made for a variety of fun reasons including having too nice of hair or for not eating your vegetables.

Chrissy Halliday was arrested in the morning and was charged $500. She said a close friend arranged for her jail time.

“(My friend said) by the way, I am putting you on the most wanted knowing that I believe strongly in the cancer society and the work that they do,” said Halliday.

Halliday said she has donated to the cause in the past but this is the first time she has participated in the event. She said she was looking forward to putting in her time and raising her bail.

Last year’s jailbirds managed to raise just over $16,000 for the cause.

The event wrapped up at 4:30 p.m.
