Crusaders have the speed for success

Oct 22, 2015 | 5:20 PM

The Carlton Crusader cross country team finished fifth in provincials Oct. 17 in Saskatoon.

Carlton’s top finishers were Anthony Antaya and Hannah Walker who both placed sixth in their age groups. Twelve schools participated in their classification.

Coach Jen Kohut said all of her runners shared a very similar trait which allowed them to be successful.

“Definitely the commitment and the time that they put in helped them be successful. I know these are multi-sport athletes so it was really hard to find time for a set practice time, so I had to find a time that worked for everyone,” said Kohut. “I had the best turnout at 7:30 a.m. every morning and everyone was always there getting better.”

Carlton grade 12 senior runner Tyler Diakiw, who finished 19th, says he joined to improve in track and field, but quickly found out how much he likes cross country.

“The training was the main part that made me interested. It’s more the endurance kind of running and training so now after I do speed in track, I’ll have a lot more endurance from cross country,” said Tyler.

Coach Kohut says her background in the sport allows her to better train her runners.

“I have a good background in cross country training, I was a husky athlete myself so I kind of know when to put in hard runs and longer runs,” Kohut said.

Jennifer Noble, who’s in grade 11, finished 31st in the junior girls division, and says you must take a certain mentality into a race.

“When I race during cross country I never think about placing,” said Noble. “I always just went in with a positive mindset and tried my best.

“I just wanted to get a new personal best and have fun while doing so.”

The Carlton cross country season is over and the athletes coming back say they want to keep improving for next year.
