The Prince Albert Raiders, Kinsmen Club of Prince Albert, and 900 CKBI have announced the female, male, and sportsperson of the year award winners.

Hockey goaltender Jessica Vance is the Female Athlete of the Year. While playing for the PA A&W Bears hockey team she set numerous league records. She has the most games played (91), minutes played (5128), wins (48) and shutouts (16).

She currently attends the University of Manitoba and plays on their women’s hockey team.

“Ultimately I’d like to get the starting spot on my team and lead my team to success,” she said. “I know that’s the reason I’m here to have more success with my team right now.”

The Male Athlete of the Year award goes to professional bull rider Tanner Byrne. In his fourth year as a professional bull rider, he’s currently competing in the Pro Bull Riding (PBR) World Finals in Las Vegas.

He is one of two Canadians at the tournament, and is currently in the 13th spot.

Byrne’s father is famed bull fighter Ryan Byrne, and he knew he’d be a bull rider growing up.

“For me since day one bull riding and rodeoing has been a part of me. My dad was the best bull fighter to ever come out of Canada, so it’s just like one of them deals.”

One of Canada’s top female CrossFit athletes won the Sportsperson of the Year award. Whitney Darchuk-Parenteau has made it to the podium for numerous sports such as downhill skiing, volleyball, and track.

She finished first among women at the Synergy Strength and Fitness Competition in Saskatoon, and competed at the West Regional in Tacoma, Washington.

She now co-runs the gym Pure Athletics.

“To be able to be a role model and influence people is amazing,” said Darchuk-Parenteau. “It makes me enjoy what I do every day and I look forward to it all the time.”

The three athletes will be honoured at the annual Kinsmen Sportsman Dinner on Saturday, Nov. 7 in the Art Hauser Centre Ches Leach Lounge.

Proceeds from the night will go towards the Prince Albert Raiders Education Fund and the Kinsmen Club who will use the funds to support “Our Community’s Greatest Needs,” as per the Kinsmen mantra.
