Carlton students learn first hand how things work on election night

With the election that recently took place on Monday Oct. 19, a group of  students from Carlton Comprehensive Public High School in Prince Albert took the opportunity to help out as registration officers.

Teacher Kelly Klassen thinks it is a good step for the students when they work the elections so they can witness first hand how it works.

“ By working they see the political process in action and are involved and know it is not a scary thing to do and they see the importance on what it means to vote,” said Klassen

Grade 12 student Rahul Parekh said working the elections opened his eyes to how it really works.

“Honestly learning the system that goes on behind each election was quite eye opening. It definitely isn’t an easy job and has given me a sense of respect for all the workers at the polls,” said Parekh.

Klassen said he believes that even though students that are under the age of 18 can’t vote they still have many reasons to pay attention to the election.

“They eventually will be voters,” said Klasssen. “So if they practice now then it becomes habit. You got to make habits out of being participants in a democracy.”

“So if they participate now the hope is that if they do this now they will do it every four years,” he added.

Damian Grujic, another student who worked the election, said he also thinks it is important for his fellow classmates to pay attention to the process.

“The election affects them as well and everyone should be well informed about the decisions being made for them and their country,” said Grujic.

Teachers at Carlton Comprehensive Public High School said they want to continue to give their students the opportunity to have a greater understanding of how the election process works in the future.
