Reconciliation to be added to Wednesday’s political forum

Oct 7, 2015 | 12:07 PM

An all-candidates’ forum has been scheduled for Wednesday night at the John M. Cuelenaere Public Library in Prince Albert.

The Prince Albert chapter of the Council of Canadians has added the topic of reconciliation to the “Not in the News” discussion, calling it a “serious omission.”

The commissioners for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) noted in a release, “Reconciliation requires constructive action on addressing the ongoing legacies of colonialism that have had destructive impacts on Aboriginal peoples’ education, cultures and languages, health, child welfare, the administration of justice and economic opportunities and prosperity.”

The candidates will be asked what their party’s policy is on implementing recommendations made by the TRC to set things right with First Nations, Inuit and Metis people.

Other topics will include climate action, electoral reform, food security, healthcare, peace, poverty and trade agreements.

The discussion will be a panel format where participants will have three minutes to respond to questions followed by a 10 minute discussion amongst the panelists.

The discussion is a way for residents to evaluate local candidates and make the best judgement on who they want to represent them in the House of Commons.

The “Not in the News” all-candidates’ forum will be held in Meeting Room 3 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
