P.A. Fire Department: ‘hear the beep where you sleep’

It’s National Fire Prevention Week and the Prince Albert Fire Department is making sure residents know.

The fire department have a booth set up at the Gateway Mall all week to remind people about fire safety.

“We’re just getting into the season where people will be firing up their furnaces,” P.A. Fire Department’s Cole Tait, said. “We’re just here promoting fire safety to people, handing out information.”

This year’s theme is “Hear the Beep Where you Sleep,” an initiative to ensure residents have working and properly placed smoke alarms in their homes.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of home fire deaths occur when people are asleep from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Tait is advising the public to check the batteries and the expiry date on their smoke alarms.

The fire department is also reminding residents to make sure everyone in the home is familiar with smoke alarm sounds and to plan an escape procedure in case of a fire.

“You want (smoke alarms) in as many rooms and in as many areas as possible in your house,” Tait explained. “If you sleep with the door closed, have them in your bedroom. Either way, it’s not a bad thing to have them in hallways, kitchens, and places like that.”

Other information pamphlets on home fire extinguishers, the PA Alert Program, and Halloween safety are also available at the booth.
