Lockdown continues at Sask. Penitentiary

Oct 2, 2015 | 6:26 AM

A lockdown is still in effect in the medium security unit of the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.

Guards are conducting what’s known as an ‘exceptional search’ of the prison’s medium-security unit, looking for any unauthorized items including drugs, weapons, tobacco, or cell phones.

“I don’t have any information on the trigger for the search but suffice to say the institutional managers believed it was necessary to maintain the safery and security of the institution,” said Jeff Campbell, a spokesperson for the Correctional Service of Canada.

The lockdown went into effect Thursday afternoon and visits to the medium security unit have been suspended until the search ends.
