Chief candidate promises to address education funding and housing

Oct 2, 2015 | 7:05 AM

Helen Ben, a former school principal, is one of three candidates for Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN).

Not surprisingly education is one of Ben’s key priorities.

She vows, if elected, she would lobby the federal government to change the education funding formula.

“There needs to be parity in terms of funding, there’s been caps in terms of education and that’s affecting our education system.  In some cases there are situations where we are unable to provide adequate funding for our schools and that effects programming,” said Ben.

Further to this Ben said she would get the federal government to re-look at the resource revenue sharing agreement, explaining that Northern Saskatchewan has a very young First Nations population.

“How do we ensure there is a bright future for our youth and that’s looking at creating some economic opportunities, but also educating and training our youth,” she said.

Ben said the young population can provide challenges but also opportunities if adequate skills training can be provided.

The housing situation on First Nations reserves has been a big issue on the campaign trail for all three candidates, and all three are promising to lobby the federal government to increase funding.

Ben said she is troubled by countless stories of overcrowding and homes with mold.

“If you have good homes, if you have good structures and adequate housing for people then their livelihood and their well-being improves.

Ben said if elected she would be an innovative leader.  She said she would also listen to the advice of elders and chiefs.

The election for chief will take place during the FSIN fall legislative assembly Oct. 28 and 29 in Saskatoon.

The other candidates for chief are Bobby Cameron and Leo Omani.
