UPDATE: RCMP arrest two escaped prisoners north of Saskatoon

Oct 1, 2015 | 1:36 PM

Two escaped prisoners are back in custody after an incident that saw RCMP and city police swarm a rural area north of Saskatoon.

Warman/Martensville RCMP were told two men from the Saskatoon Correctional Centre, who were part of a reduced custody urban work camp, walked away from their group in the 500 block of Main Street in Martensville around 9 a.m.

Daniel Forest, 25, was found and arrested in a rural area in Corman Park around 11:55 a.m. while Cory Lee Rushkewich, also 25, was spotted by a passerby and arrested at 5:25 p.m.

Both men will be in court Friday on charges of escaping lawful custody.

By noon on Thursday, police had surrounded a large block of rural land around the Richardson Pioneer grain elevator facility just off Highway 11 between Saskatoon and Warman.

While police cruisers lined the roads, a group of half a dozen officers arrived in a black armored vehicle and began to search through the brush in the surrounded area with their guns and a police dog.

Highway 11 travelers could see at least one police cruiser with an officer standing outside with a firearm in the southbound lane. The public had been asked to stay away from the area around Township Road 381/382/3052.
