Two Miles for Mary raising funds for seniors transportation program

Sep 30, 2015 | 11:12 PM

Prince Albert’s senior’s transportation program’s annual fundraiser 2 Miles for Mary is set to take place on Friday morning.

The annual radio-a-thon and breakfast fundraiser assists in providing a large portion of the funds needed to ensure the program can continue to operate. To date the program has been providing rides to seniors since 1976.

Having access to affordable door to door service helps to ensure that Prince Albert seniors can maintain their independence. It is an important service that many rely on each year.

“We have had a 138 seniors use the regular seniors transportation and 160 use the assisted service in the last year,” said Marilyn Peterson, event co-ordinator for 2 Miles for Mary. “That is a lot of people. That’s roughly around 6,400 rides…that have been given in one calendar year, so you can see that it is a service that is needed.”

Every year a ‘Mary’ is chosen from those seniors who use the program to represent the 2 Miles for Mary fundraiser

This year’s Mary is 79-year-old Eleanor George.

George has lived in Prince Albert for 65 years and she still resides in her own house. George is very enthusiastic about the seniors transportation program and has been utilizing the service the last few years. She remains active in the community and still takes part in various volunteer efforts.

This year’s breakfast radio-a-thon and fundraiser is set to take place Friday Oct. 2 at the Prince Albert Heritage Centre from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m.
