Family of missing Hudson Bay man, calls for help

Oct 1, 2015 | 9:25 AM

Shantelle Wagil said it is not normal for her grandfather to suddenly disappear.

Friday will mark one week since John Maxwell Purcell, 87, was last seen.

He is believed to be driving a purple 2008 Chevrolet Silverado with Saskatchewan license plate 225 GAL.

“We’ve had some (leads) in Yorkton, but they didn’t pan out.  We had some in Wakaw, but that didn’t pan out.  We’ve had a couple in Saskatoon, nothing’s panned out. We’ve had one in Cochrane, Alberta but that hasn’t panned out,” said Wagil.

Wagil fears her grandfather may be feeling confused as he was taking some new medication for his back around the time he went missing, and the medication was causing him to feel a bit disoriented.

Purcell was also taking medication for his heart and blood pressure.

Wagil said her grandfather is normally a very friendly man.

“Like if you’re at a gas station he will just go up to you and introduce himself as Maxwell,” she said.

The search team on the ground now consists of 15 people, divided up amongst six vehicles.

Wagil said they are combing an area around Hudson Bay 100 km in every direction.

“And the rest of us are reaching out to the media, gas stations, bus stations, highway patrol, Ducks Unlimited because he is a hunter.”

Wagil said the support the family has received has been very helpful.

“We are not losing hope,” she said.

Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact their nearest RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
