Vandals disturb the peace at South Hill Cemetery

Roughly 40 headstones at the South Hill cemetery have been vandalized.

The vandalism was discovered on Thursday by a family visiting their loved ones, who soon after reported it to city hall.

Some of the head stones were simply tipped off, others had been smashed.  There was also graffiti spray painted onto the walkways and trees.  

“It honestly just leaves you with a terrible feeling for the families, and community in general, because number one, why people do vandalism is a thing you question all the time, but number two, why in a place that memorializes people?” said director of community services Jody Boulet.

Boulet said the department will begin the process of matching the headstone with the family records, and assessing how much of the damage is the responsibility of the city. Once that’s complete, they will begin the process of contacting the individual families.

“Just so that they are aware, and then if there are any responsibilities that lie with the family, we want to make sure that is clear just so that the proper steps can be taken,” he said.

The cost of the damage is still unknown.

paNOW contacted Cornerstone Insurance and was told that a home insurance policy will typically cover the damages, but each the amount each provider covers tends to vary. Some insurance providers will cover up to $10,000 in damage.

The next task, and possible difficulty, will be contacting and notifying the individual families.
