Huskies’ P.A. connection returns home for preseason action

Sep 5, 2015 | 7:56 PM

When University of Saskatchewan Huskies soccer players Erica Parenteau and Meagan Manson stepped onto Prime Minister’s Park (PMP) soccer field Saturday for a preseason tune-up, it was the first time they did so in quite some time.

Parenteau hasn’t played on Prime Minister’s Park since 2011, a year that she played at nationals along with Manson, who stayed in P.A. for another season as she’s a year younger.

“This field brings back a lot of memories,” said Parenteau, Huskies’ fullback.

The two have grown up on the soccer pitch together, playing with the Prince Albert Celtic Soccer Club, the St. Mary Marauders, among a pile of tournaments together. Most recently, they’ve played as defenders on the Huskies for the past four seasons.

Parenteau, who’s entering her fifth year with the Huskies, made sure that partnership would still be intact as she suggested Manson join the Huskies after high school.

“She’s the reason why I played Huskies,” said Manson, now the Huskies team captain. “If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be on the team. She pushed me to play. I didn’t really know what to do [after high school] but she just guided me.”

“It’s awesome we get to play together again,” said Parenteau, Huskies co-captain. “I think we have a bond and our whole backline is pretty tight. It’s really fun to play together.”

The two were in their last exhibition game before their regular season starts, one they are very much looking forward too. The Huskies are coming off a 7-2-3 season, good for third place in Canada West conference.

“That was a big moment for us then, but we want to make it to nationals this year,” said Parenteau.

“I think we made ourselves known last season,” said Manson. “We’ve been preparing for this [year] since January; we didn’t really have an offseason.”

Prince Albert’s Nathan Reis scored a pair of goals for the Alumni.

Although the game was technically a friendly, it got quite competitive out there at times. The Alumni are preparing for their national tournament next month and the Huskies are getting their season underway Sept. 11 against the MacEwan University Griffins.

The Alumni were down 2-0 early in the first half, while Alumni midfielder and P.A.’s own Dwayne Gareau placed a beautiful finesse shot in the top drawer. The goal was disallowed, due to a controversial offside earlier in the sequence.

After the game, Gareau shook it off and said calls like that happen. Gareau also organized the event and hopes it can turn into an annual occurrence of having the Huskies programs down for a weekend.
