Isbister makes convincing case for full time spot with Mintos

Aug 16, 2015 | 6:13 PM

Prince Albert’s Braden Isbister wants nothing more than to finish his minor hockey career at the Midget AAA level with his hometown Prince Albert Mintos.

That desire was put on in full display on Sunday in the Mintos fall camp scrimmage. Isbister scored two goals and added an assist in Team Black’s 6-2 victory over Team Yellow at the Kinsmen.

“I just think it would be a great opportunity to play in my hometown for my last year of minor hockey,” said Isbister, who will turn 17 years old on Wednesday. “I think that would be great. They’re a great organization, so I hope I can play there.

“Obviously you want to do good [in scrimmages], but you still gotta work hard. This is just part of the tryouts, so you just got to keep working at it and hopefully make the team.”

Isbister played seven regular season games with the Mintos last year as an affiliate, the most of any player on the team’s reserve roster last season. He also added another game in the playoffs.

He’s spent the last two years on the Prince Albert Midget AA Raiders, including a 55-point season last year that found him in a tie for third in Centre Four Hockey League scoring. Those points come with a number of attributes Isbister possesses, especially his foot-speed.

“I use my speed and try and use my hockey senses as much as I can and make plays in the offensive zone,” said Isbister. “I think I’m a good D player, too.”

Also scoring for Team Black were Jackson Kowblick, Matthew Flodell, Cody Chasse and Kyle Schneider. Jacob Dumont and Mintos incumbent Brody Madarash teamed up for the two Team Yellow goals.
