Northern Green Party candidate focusing on change

Aug 6, 2015 | 6:16 AM

The Green Party candidate for Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River believes in system change and true democracy.

“There’s too much power centralized within the Prime Minister’s office, (we need to be) getting more power back into the constituencies,” said Warren Koch.

Koch, 34, has a background in health care.  He is involved with the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses, and he is also the northern representative council member of the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association.

“I like to be involved and advocate for families and patients,” he said.

This election will mark Koch’s first run at Federal politics, but he said his political ambitions began decades ago during his time as Student Body President in high school.

Another issue important for Koch is treaty rights.  Koch said he was inspired by comments made by former Assembly of First Nations Chief Shawn Atleo, regarding treaty rights and the failure of the government to respect them.

“And that’s something that is a passionate issue for me being born and raised in Northern Saskatchewan, I do believe that the Crown had dishonoured the treaties with spirit and intent and I think that there’s a need to rectify that,” said Koch.

Koch said even though he was not directly involved with what he calls the ‘atrocities’, he can still appreciate the cause as a user of the province’s lakes and parks.

During the last federal election in 2011, the Green Party received less than three per cent of the vote.

Koch said he plans to help change people’s views towards politics by having a positive campaign and focusing on the issues.

“A lot of people are disengaged, and feel like their vote won’t matter. With only 60 per cent of the people voting in the last election that’s concerning to me,” he said.

The other candidates in this riding are Rob Clarke(Cons), Lawrence Joseph(Lib), and Georgina Jolibois( NDP).
