Ray of sunshine for mental health patients at Victoria Hospital

Jul 22, 2015 | 5:17 PM

A brand new courtyard is brightening the day for mental health patients at Victoria Hospital.

The recently upgraded and renovated courtyard located in the mental health unit was revealed today with a celebratory BBQ.

Fully equipped with lawn furniture, a garden, and a jumbo checkers set, patients will be able to enjoy the outdoors while summer lasts.

“Patients love to come out here,” recreation therapist Randi LaMotte said. “It’s just a place for them to just let out some stress and relax. Maybe have some connections with other patients and staff members.”

The new courtyard is in addition to another outdoor area used primarily for recreational sports. New activities such as art therapy and yoga have been introduced in the new courtyard.

The new courtyard was made possible by a $75,000 donation by the Elks & Royal Purple District 2 Lodge.

Other donations were made by RBC, Canadian Tire and Econo Lumber, as well as help from horticulturalist Hilary Phillips and the Mental Health Unit staff.
