SK Government Fire Update – July 17

Jul 17, 2015 | 2:52 PM

FIRE SITUATION UPDATE (JULY 17 AM):

112 active wildfires currently, down from 127 yesterday. Rain has fallen in many areas across northern Saskatchewan with more rain expected, which will assist efforts to fight fires on the ground and from the air.

1600 firefighters will continue to confront fires on the front lines near affected communities with the help of air support. The firefighting focus today will continue to be near Hall Lake and Stanley Mission, where the fires are susceptible to changes in weather conditions.

For more specific fire info, visit: http://www.environment.gov.sk.ca/fire or call the Wildfire Client Service Office at 1-800-567-4224.

The mandatory evacuation for Lac La Ronge Indian Band, Air Ronge, La Ronge and the subdivisions of Wadin Bay and English Bay were lifted at 1p.m. today, with exception of those with chronic illnesses, children 2 years and under, and pregnant women. Mandatory evacuation orders are still in place for Eagle Point, Nemeiben Lake, Lamp Lake, Sucker River, Hall Lake, Sikachu Lake and Clam Lake. Fire threats will continue to be assessed for these locations. A full list of evacuation orders as of 8:00 a.m. this morning is attached in a picture below.

An emergency room will be set up and ready at the La Ronge Health Center. The center will not be able to respond to chronic health concerns until more staff is back in place. Within 24-48 hours more staff will be back and a full slate of medical services, with a lab, x-ray, and physiotherapy will be back. The pharmacy will be open this weekend, but the clinic will be open at the start of next week. Mail will begin to arrive from holding in Prince Albert starting early next week.

If you have questions about evacuation orders, call your local authority or the Red Cross Inquiry Line for evacuees or family members of evacuees: 1-888-953-3463. Multiple levels of government and volunteers are working well together to coordinate transportation and ensuring an orderly and safe return to communities.

Remember, in order for an evacuation to be fully lifted, a number of criteria must be met: no wildfire/smoke risk to community, medical services available, safe water, power, telephone, sewer, gas, 911 service and local authority present. For more info on the criteria, see our recent post: https://www.facebook.com/SKGov/videos/1017975908220810/

Most of Saskatchewan’s Provincial Parks are open. There are some closures in the north to note but many are out enjoying our beautiful parks. For more info: www.saskparks.net
