Sask. stunt pilot ready to perform close to home

Jul 13, 2015 | 7:06 AM

People in Prince Albert better get ready for some twists and turns as pilots soar into town to show what they can do.

The Prairie Heritage Air Show Society has been planning the Celebration of Flight Air Show which runs from July 14-16 at the Prince Albert Municipal Airport.

Stunt pilot Stefan Trischuk, originally from Saskatoon, said he’s excited to be performing in it.

“In 2012, I was on the ground as a volunteer and my dream back then was I wanted to fly the show,” said Trischuk. “That’s why it’s so special to me getting to fly it this year.”

Since getting involved in stunt flying, he’s been doing shows as far away as Oregon, Vancouver and Yellow Knife.

“I’ve never had a show this close before,” said Trischuk.

He said besides tricks and stunts, the show will also have a historic element.

“It’s gonna be a great gathering of Second World War airplanes,” Trischuk said, listing a B25 and B17, both antique, as planes that people will be able to check out.

He said the airport was originally built as a training base for cadets from all over the world who were brought to Saskatchewan to be trained before going off to war.

“There’s a bit of an antique trainer theme to it because it’s a bit of a celebration of the training that was done during the Second World War at the Prince Albert airport,” said Trischuk.

Although being a stunt pilot might not be every kids’ dream, Trischuk said it really is something he’s always wanted to do.

“I was that kid trying to make parachutes out of garbage bags and throwing them off the roof of the barn and making kites and stuff,” said Trischuk.

He started hang-gliding at age 17 but soon realized flying down the straight and narrow wasn’t for him. As soon as he could, he began working towards trick flying.

Doing shows was the next step.

“My passion is aerobatic flying and this is a great way for me to share that with the people,” said Trischuk. “I really wish I could take everyone in the cockpit with me, but I can’t but by doing this it’s my way of sharing it, it’s cool to be able to share.”

Trischuk said he’ll be flying two different planes. People can look forward to viewing a number of tricks including loops, rolls, hammerheads and flying upside down and backwards.

Trischuk was featured on AIRSHOW, a TV show on the Discovery Channel, which followed him as he began his career stunt flying over the past two summers. The show, which he said has been a great experience, has aired in over 100 countries. For more on Trischuk, visit his website.

A wristband for the three-day show is $20 or you can pay a reduced rate if you only attend certain days. For more information on attractions and pricing, visit the Air Show website
