SK Government Fire Update – July 11

Jul 11, 2015 | 12:08 PM

121 current active fires. 610 fires year-to-date. No growth of fire threat to communities overnight.

Projected east winds today will have crews closely monitoring La Loche, Pinehouse and La Ronge in order to adjust crew deployment and suppression strategy.

Heavy smoke is being reported this morning which can ground many of our aircraft if the smoke doesn’t clear.

This video shows how difficult it is for aircraft to make precision drops within smoky conditions – and this clip is from a relatively clear day near La Ronge! If you look closely near the end, you’ll see a red line of flame retardant that the bomber has to extend to help prevent a fire from spreading. https://www.facebook.com/SKGov/videos/vb.465410500144023/1016543455030722/?type=2&theater

For more specific fire info, visit: http://www.environment.gov.sk.ca/fire or call the Wildfire Client Service Office at 1-800-567-4224.

We are escorting permanent residents in some communities northeast of La Ronge, like Missinipe, not affected by the evacuations back to their homes. To be clear, these convoys are not for people still under mandatory evacuation, only permanent residents who were unable to return home from the south because of the road closures. Mines and businesses in the area are also part of the convoys so they can transport critical supplies like food and fuel.

Evacuees are encouraged to call their insurance broker and check their coverage as living expenses may be covered while they are displaced. Fuel, meals and transportation costs may be covered as well. For more info: http://www.saskatchewan.ca/…/j…/10/sgi-coverage-for-evacuees

Most of Saskatchewan’s Provincial Parks are open! There are some closures in the north and fire bans to note but many are out enjoying our beautiful parks. For more info: www.saskparks.net

Highways and roads across the north are open and closed intermittently depending on smoke and wildfire conditions, visit: http://www.saskatchewan.ca/l…/transportation/highway-hotline
