SK Government Fire Update – July 10

Jul 10, 2015 | 1:45 PM

There are currently 119 active fires across the province. Threats to communities are stable even though some fires are still active. The Egg and Eli fires have merged, now called the Egg fire and covering a 95,000 hectare area.

For some perspective, that’s 5 1/2 times larger than the entire area of the City of Saskatoon. Crews and military personnel have effectively kept this fire about 2 kms away from La Ronge and protected critical infrastructure.

For more specific fire info, visit: http://www.environment.gov.sk.ca/fire or call the Wildfire Client Service Office at 1-800-567-4224.

As a result of improved smoke conditions, approximately 200 evacuees from the communities of Sturgeon Lake, Wahpeton, Red Earth and Little Red have returned. All other evacuation orders remain the same and there are no timelines for changes.

We understand evacuees are anxious to get home and we appreciate your patience. It’s our priority to reduce threats and ensure services (power, water, gas) are operational so people can safely return to their homes. However, as long as there is a direct threat to the community, we won’t recommend that people return. Conditions can change rapidly with these very large fires and re-issuing evacuation orders would cause added stress to residents and on the emergency management teams with many potential safety concerns. Thank you for your understanding.

There are over 800 firefighting personnel, 360 military troops, 57 helicopters (include the large crane helicopter), 21 tankers, 10 fixed wing planes and countless others supporting fire suppression efforts today in many areas.
